If Copernicus, Galileo or Sir Isaac Newton, giants upon whose shoulders all modern astronomers stand, were alive today, they would quite likely be amazed at the equipment available for people who are fascinated with the skies above us. They would be especially excited by the viewing power of giant binoculars. These big binoculars are used not only by astronomers, however, but for terrestrial use as well. But the huge binoculars are certainly preferred by many stargazers over telescopes, because using both eyes is more comfortable than using just one.
Basically, a giant binocular magnifies the view ten times or more, and has a 70 mm or larger front (objective) lens. The big binoculars’ eye brings heavenly bodies or terrestrial objects closer to the human eye in dramatic fashion. At one time the giant binocular, huge as it was (and also called the Chinese giant binoculars) was available only to the military. Then, due to worldwide demand, giant astronomical binoculars became available to the general public. At first these giant binoculars were extremely expensive, and beyond the reach of all but the most affluent viewing enthusiasts. But recently some more affordable models have come on the market.
Some of the cheaper giant binoculars have focusing problems, because the eyepieces tilt and shift. However, Celestron’s 15x70 Skymaster, an economy-priced binocular and perhaps the best giant binocular in its price range, does not have that problem. These Celestron giant binoculars were tested against the much more expensive Fujinon 16x70 FMT-SX binoculars. The Fujinons, of course, gave superior images. They should, considering the high price. But the Skymasters provided excellent brightness, quality and contrast, considering the low price. For someone who wants quality giant binoculars at an affordable price, Celestron’s 15x70 Skymaster is a good buy. For those who do want to lay out the extra money, there are the Celestron 25x100 Skymaster giant astronomy binoculars. The 25x100 giant astronomy binoculars work best when mounted on a tripod.
Giant 7 inch binoculars will also provide the viewer with a terrific look at the night sky, or whatever terrestrial animals or objects he or she wishes to view. The viewing enthusiast can find a giant 7 inch binocular on eBay, as well as all of the other long distance viewing aids available to the public. For those who shop around the internet and compare prices, there are some good buys available. Just be sure to get the type of binoculars that will suit your particular needs.
